Harbin authorities seek to win back confidence

Harbin’s embattled local authorities embarked on a new drive on Friday to win back public confidence in the wake of the pollution threat that has caused the north-eastern Chinese city to shut down its water supply.

With official newspapers publishing stinging criticism of the initial cover-up about the toxic chemicals leak in a river and Beijing sending in a team of investigators, Harbin announced a flurry of new measures to demonstrate the situation was under control.
