France Telecom chief named finance minister

Thierry Breton, chief executive of France Telecom, on Friday night became France's fourth finance minister within a year, capping a day of drama that had seen his predecessor Hervé Gaymard resign in a scandal over his luxury Paris flat.

President Jacques Chirac's choice of Mr Breton comes at a critical time for the government and the French economy.
