Final results from Afghanistan’s flawed elections could be issued as soon as early October, following a decision to accelerate a recount process by screening only a sample of suspicious results, a Western official said.
Uncertainty over the outcome is one of the factors delaying a decision by Barack Obama, the US president, on whether to send more troops to reduce the West’s foundering war effort or narrow the focus of the Afghan mission to hunting militant leaders.
