Britons buying plants, lawnmowers, garden furniture and outside toys have given Home Retail Group better-than-expected sales in the past three months.

But the owner of the Homebase and Argos chains remained cautious about the outlook for the year as it grapples with adverse currency movements and uncertainty over consumers’ willingness to spend.
