Robert Gates, US defence secretary, said on Friday that North Korea had not taken any extraordinary military steps, despite the Stalinist regime’s belligerent rhetoric in the wake of its recent nuclear test.

“I am not aware of any military moves in the North that are out of the ordinary,” Mr Gates said.
