Dmitry Medvedev’s election as Russia’s next president was unfair, untransparent and thoroughly undemocratic.

However, he is the Russian people’s choice and he will succeed Vladimir Putin. So the west must accept the result and learn to live with it. The US and the European Union may even see in the new presidency a modest opportunity to ease some of the serious difficulties surrounding east-west ties.
