Germany’s Social Democratic Party is set to choose Matthias Platzeck, current premier of Brandenburg, to replace Franz Müntefering as party leader in an attempt to try and break the deadlock surrounding talks to build a new governing coalition with the CDU.

Mr Platzeck has the backing of party leaders and is expected to be formally nominated later on Wednesday. His position will be subject to approval by the SPD congress later in November.
