Mark Hurd, the chairman and chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, has joined the board of News Corp, the media conglomerate controlled by Rupert Murdoch.

Mr Hurd replaces Roderick Paige, the former US education secretary. Mr Paige, who served as a director since 2006, will continue to work for News Corp as a consultant after his departure, according to the company.
