Rice cancels week-long trip to Asia

President George W. Bush would attend the funeral of Ariel Sharon in the event that the Israeli prime minister does not survive his stroke, diplomats said yesterday as Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, cancelled a scheduled visit to Asia next week to stay close to events.

“She decided, because of the situation in the Middle East, it was the right decision to stay here in Washington,” Sean McCormack, the State Department spokesman, said.
