Top choice seen as patron saint of UK retail banking

To some, Sir Brian Pitman, Virgin's choice to chair Northern Rock, is the patron saint of British retail banking.

During the 14 years he headed Lloyds as chief executive and the four as chairman he transformed the bank before stepping down in 2001.
