Sarkozy out of step over Russian poll

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France broke ranks with other European Union leaders in response to Russia’s widely criticised parliamentary election when he rang President Vladimir Putin to “congratulate” him on his victory, it emerged on Tuesday.

Mr Sarkozy’s more positive reaction puts him at odds with the German government, which condemned a “neither free, fair nor democratic election”, and the UK, which urged an immediate investigation of alleged electoral abuses.
