Gonzales steps down under pressure

US attorney-general Alberto Gonzales resigned on Monday, handing a victory to Democrats who accused him of politicising the Justice Department and lying about his role in the Bush administration’s controversial terrorist surveillance programme.

President George W. Bush said he accepted the resignation only “reluctantly”, describing his long-time Texan friend as a man of “integrity, decency and principle” whose name had been “dragged through the mud for political reasons”.
