Brown urged to show authority to end dissent

Gordon Brown was besieged by criticism from senior Labour figures on Friday as he was urged to reassert his authority after one of the most destabilising weeks of his premiership.

Critics of the prime minister issued scathing attacks on his leadership as they sought to exploit a crisis of confidence within the Labour party.
