Overview: Equities slide as risk aversion returns

US and European equities fell further towards last month’s five-year lows on Wednesday, as investors grew increasingly nervous about the deteriorating outlook for the global economy.

Commodity prices also sank and credit spreads widened sharply as gloomy macroeconomic and corporate news fuelled a fresh bout of risk aversion. The dollar, the yen and US government bonds were the chief beneficiaries of the flight from risky assets.
