Pay deal prevents Italian strike

Italy's centre-left government reached a last-minute deal with trade union leaders yesterday that averted a strike by several million public sector workers.

According to the CISL, Italy's second largest union federation, the deal involves a monthly pay rise of €101 ($135.80, £68.50) backdated to February 1.
