Brown turns to old foe for cabinet

Peter Mandelson has made a startling return to Westminster as he came back from Brussels to join Gordon Brown’s government in an unexpectedly dramatic cabinet reshuffle that saw the prime minister reshape his team to battle the economic downturn.

Mr Brown’s decision to bring his old enemy the Blairite European Union trade commissioner into the cabinet as business secretary is designed in part to head off the threat of a future rebellion against his leadership.
