Merck sells generics unit to Mylan for €4.9bn

Merck of Germany has agreed to sell its generics division to Mylan Laboratories of the US for €4.9bn ($6.6bn), as generic drugmakers continue to seek global scale.

The deal highlights Mylan’s aggressive quest to keep pace with the global reach of the world’s largest generics groups, Teva Pharmaceuticals of Israel and Sandoz, a unit of Swiss drugmaker Novartis.
