European football fans should be delighted by the prospect of this season’s climax in Rome on May 27; a Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona. Each side plays attractive football, and both teams brim with phenomenal players. This mouth-watering contest, however, is being overshadowed by controversy about dubious refereeing decisions in this week’s semi-finals. It is time to introduce video referees to football.

Darren Fletcher, a Manchester United midfielder, was sent off during that team’s match against Arsenal on Tuesday without seeming to commit a foul. As a result, he faces suspension for the final. Barcelona beat Chelsea in their semi-final on Wednesday following some highly contentious refereeing decisions; the London club should probably have been awarded at least one penalty, which could have reversed the result of the tie.
