Japanese companies have cut spending on research equipment by far more than their US counterparts in response to the global slump, according to the president of Shimadzu, the scientific instrument maker.
Shigehiko Hattori, whose company is a leading supplier of instruments such as mass spectrometers for biology labs, told the Financial Times that while US companies still seemed to be buying necessary machines for R&D, Japanese companies had all but stopped since last October.
