Sony Pictures’ summer blockbuster, The Da Vinci Code, overcame tepid reviews and opposition from the Catholic Church to take in $224m at the box office over the weekend – the second-biggest worldwide opening ever.
That performance, including $77m in US sales on the opening weekend – making it the best US opening so far this year – should offer encouragement to Hollywood as it enters a crucial season of big-budget films.
