Milk scandal threatens China dairies

Chinese authorities were fighting to contain the fallout from the tainted milk powder scandal on Wednesday as it threatened the dairy industry after it claimed three babies and left more than 6,000 children ill.

Shares in China Mengniu, one of the country’s biggest and best-known dairy producers, were suspended in Hong Kong on Wednesday after the government said some Mengniu milk powder samples had tested positive for the chemical melamine.
