Schüssel party loses Austrian election

A left-right coalition government of Austria’s two biggest parties looked like the only viable option on Monday after Social Democrat Alfred Gusenbauer defeated the ruling conservatives in a parliamentary election.

The conservative People’s party of the Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel suffered a stunning defeat in general elections on Sunday as the Social Democrats narrowly took first place.
