Push to ban torture and close Guantánamo

A group of retired senior military officers on Wednesday urged president-elect Barack Obama to make a strong statement in his January inauguration speech about barring torture and harsh interrogation techniques.

In a meeting with Eric Holder, the incoming attorney-general, the former officers, who included General Joseph Hoar, the former head of US Central Command, pushed for a clean break from the policies that came to define the Bush administration’s “war on terror”.
