Senate leader steps up pressure on drug ads

Pressure on the pharmaceuticals industry's US consumer advertising intensified on Friday as Bill Frist, Senate majority leader, called for a halt on advertising for a new drug's first two years on the market.

Mr Frist, the Tennessee republican and a doctor, asked for drug companies voluntarily to restrict their prescription drug advertising due to concerns that current practices are harmful.
