Sarkozy reverses stance on subsidised jobs

France is to create an extra 100,000 state-subsidised jobs next year, one of a series of measures intended to underpin employment during the slowdown.

The initiative was announced on Tuesday by Nicolas Sarkozy, French president. After winning office last year he criticised the scheme for creating so-called dead-end jobs, largely in the public and voluntary sectors, and cut spending on it.
