Brazil fiscal policies attacked as economy contracts

The performance of Brazil’s economy in the third quarter turned out to be even worse than most economists expected on Wednesday when the government announced gross domestic product figures showing a contraction of 1.2 per cent from the second quarter, compared with predictions of stagnation or, at worst, a contraction of 0.5 per cent.

Compared with the third quarter of 2004, the economy grew by 1 per cent.
