The two rivals in Kenya’s political crisis met on Thursday for the first time since the country’s disputed election in December – a symbolic breakthrough but one that gave few clues to their willingness to compromise.

President Mwai Kibaki travelled to his office in central Nairobi to meet Raila Odinga, the opposition leader, and the two men shook hands after the talks in front of a crowd that cheered and clapped.
