Applause is muted as Thompson sets out for presidency

Fred Thompson's first speech in his belated run for US president is taking place in a not-quite-packed convention centre hung with faux-homemade signs that read "I'm with Fred" and "Security FDT 2008".

The former senator turned actor is out to prove his conservative credentials in Iowa, a key battleground for Republicans vying for the 2008 nomination, and he does not have much time to do it.
