Berkshire unit gets subpoena from Spitzer

NEW YORK, Jan 6 (Reuters)

Berkshire Hathaway, the company run by billionaire Warren Buffett, said on Thursday its reinsurance unit received a subpoena from New York attorney-general Eliot Spitzer for information on insurance products that might help companies smooth earnings.

Berkshire said the subpoena seeks virtually identical documents and information on the nontraditional or loss mitigation insurance products that the US Securities and Exchange Commission last month requested from the unit, General Re.
