Smith fails to persuade on terror limit

Jacqui Smith, home secretary, on Tuesday failed to persuade MPs and human rights groups to back the government’s plans to extend the 28-day limit on the time terrorists can be held without charge.

Ms Smith told the home affairs select committee that the judicial and parliamentary oversight involved in the government’s plans to extend the upper limit to 42 days was a genuine attempt to balance security needs with civil liberty concerns.
