China protests over sale of looted bronzes

The Chinese government called formally on Tuesday for the cancellation of an auction of two Chinese bronzes looted more than a century ago by British and French troops and now part of the collection amassed by the late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

”The State Administration of Cultural Heritage has formally informed the auctioneer of our strong opposition to the auction, and clearly demanded its cancellation,” Ma Zhaoxu, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
