Rapid growth in the market for “clean” technology has led to demand from investors for indices that show how companies specialising in low-carbon goods and services are performing.
Compiling such indices is difficult, however, because many of the biggest players active in this market are general industrial companies that have expanded their offering to encompass low-carbon technologies – such as General Electric, Siemens, Philips and others – or fossil fuel companies that have branched out into renewables, such as Royal Dutch Shell and BP.
