Tories urged not to vote against probation bill

The Conservatives were yesterday warned by business leaders not to "play politics with reoffending" by voting against legislation that would outsource probation services to the private and voluntary sectors.

John Reid, home secretary, is facing a knife-edge vote in the Commons today after rebel Labour MPs rejected government concessions limiting opportunities for private security companies under the offender management bill and the Tories indicated they would vote against it unless further changes were made.
