European shares edged higher on Monday as investors remained timid ahead of President Obama’s US economic stimulus package passing successfully through Congress.

The pan-European FTSE Eurofirst 300 rose by 0.4 per cent to 830.08, taking the index a whisker over its 2008 close of 831.97 but still 6.6 per cent off its early 2009 high.
