Anyone who has read Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited will remember the mildly despicable character of Anthony Blanche. I know the modern-day version. He works, if one can call it a job, for the newly rich advising them on where to be and not to be, what to do and not do, who is in and who is out.
“It’s wonderful, darling. I’m paid to insult and educate,” he tells me and it seems the more he does of the former the greater credence his clients give him. I call him Mr 20 Per Cent, as he takes a cut at every corner. He is at his busiest now as we’re in the midst of what he calls “the London season”.
