Australia to begin negotiations with China on sale of uranium

Australia said yesterday it would begin talks on the sale of uranium to China but stressed that any agreement would preclude the uranium being used to make nuclear weapons.

"The agreement will establish safeguards arrangements to ensure Australian uranium supplied to China is used exclusively for peaceful purposes," said Alexander Downer, Aus-tralia's foreign minister.
