Euro stocks hit by unprecedented falls

European stocks suffered a bruising week as mounting fears of a prolonged recession knocked all but a fraction of shares sharply lower, with the financial and commodities sectors bearing the brunt of the sell-off.

“Markets have fallen by half since the beginning of the year, which is quite unprecedented,” said Edmund Shing, a strategist at BNP Paribas. “We have had big declines before but they have been spread over several years.”
