Sara Lee hit as diners stay home

Sara Lee’s $2.2bn food services business that provides slices of apple pie and cups of coffee to diners and restaurants across the US is having a tough run as cost-conscious consumers save money by eating at home.

The food maker, which owns the Jimmy Dean, Sara Lee and Hillshire Farm retail brands, said its food service business, already feeling the effects of a slowdown at the turn of the year, is seeing no pick-up in trade.
