Wall Street closed lower on Thursday as news from Microsoft precipitated a downturn across markets that had ticked higher earlier in the morning.

The turn for the day came shortly after a Microsoft executive said the software giant would begin shipping the new Windows Vista operating system “when it is available”, but gave no firm commitment to a specific date for the product’s release. Microsoft’s shares fell 2.1 per cent to $23.87.
