GM faces a tough road ahead over Opel

General Motors’ decision to hold on to its European operations may preserve its status as a global company but it could also give the struggling Detroit carmaker a fresh set of headaches.

GM’s resources – human as well as financial – have focused over the past year on reviving its core North American operations and adding heft to its successful Asian business, while it has let its profitable Latin American business drift.
