Software: Everyone’s unlocked back door

Most of us would not dream of accepting a window in a new building complex if it could be easily pushed open to provide free access to the outside world, even if it was a defining feature for the building. We would demand that it be replaced with a more secure model.

If the window was then re-used in another building complex, there would be outrage. If it led to a break in and a theft occurred demands may well be made for compensation. This is the scenario that is often being repeated played out in the software development world.
