Service sector downbeat amid decline in demand

Confidence among service sector companies has weakened sharply over the last quarter and many consumer-facing businesses are already experiencing falling demand, according to a survey published today.

The quarterly survey by the CBI employers' organisation and Grant Thornton shows the steepest fall in sentiment since 2001 among consumer service providers, with the balance of travel agents, hotels, bars and restaurants reporting lower sales.
