Irish banks tumble over toxic loans bill

Volatility returned to the Irish banking sector on Monday on concerns that a bill to establish a “bad bank” for toxic loans was making slower progress in parliament than expected.

While the minister in charge of co-ordinating voting said on Sunday that he hoped parliament would be able to pass the bill by November 12, the bill would still need the signature of President Mary McAleese and perhaps the approval of the Supreme Court.
