Now that the Bush administration is fitfully turning its attention to east Asia from the Middle East, it is being reminded of some uncomfortable regional security problems that were almost forgotten during the Iraq war.
US officials have long been aware of the danger posed by North Korea's nuclear weapons programmes. What may have escaped their notice is the rapid deterioration of the relationship between the US under President George W. Bush and South Korea under President Roh Moo-hyun.
