US stocks slump amid risk aversion

Wall Street stocks slumped on Monday, amid heightened volatility, as risk aversion sent equities spinning to their lowest levels in 19 months.

Financials were sold on growing evidence that credit market turmoil is causing margin calls at investment firms. Among the biggest fallers was Bear Stearns whose shares sank to their lowest level in five years on rumours – which it denied – that the bank was facing liquidity troubles.
