Aegon returns to profit

Aegon, the Dutch insurer, on Thursday signalled confidence about scrutiny from the European Commission over the €3bn in state aid it received as it reported a return to profit in the third quarter that nonetheless missed analyst expectations.

The group, which will this month repay the Dutch state €1bn that it raised through a rights issue, said it had sent the European Commission a plan that demonstrated “that we are a financially sound company”.
