East Timor calls for return of UN peacekeepers

East Timor has requested that United Nations peacekeepers replace an Australian-led force sent to the country following the worst wave of violence since Indonesia’s withdrawal seven years ago.

The tiny nation has also asked for a UN police contingent to be deployed in the country for at least 12 months while the world body administers the country’s elections, due next year.
