South Korea’s new president, Lee Myung-bak, will make his first overseas trips to the US and Japan this week, hoping to strengthen alliances with allies that have weakened under his liberal predecessor.

Mr Lee, who leads the conservative Grand National party, will have a summit with US President George W. Bush on Saturday. He will meet Japan’s prime minister, Yasuo Fukuda, next Monday to discuss improving bilateral relations.
