Alert as Japanese economy contracts

Advanced economies received a wake-up call on Wednesday that none were immune to the effects of the credit crisis stalking financial sectors on both sides of the Atlantic.

In Japan, new data showed the world’s second largest economy contracted by 0.6 per cent in the second quarter, its worst quarterly performance for seven years.
