Merkel puts unity at heart of EU tour

Angela Merkel, Germany’s new chancellor, on Wednesday embarked on a tour of European Union capitals, carrying with her hopes that she could help heal the EU’s debilitating internal divisions.

Ms Merkel was greeted with a kiss on the hand from Jacques Chirac, French president, when she arrived at the Elysée Palace, as she restored the tradition that German chancellors make their first foreign visit to Paris.
